2023 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations Announced

The Television Academy is set to release the nominations for the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards today. Yvette Nicole Brown from Community and Television Academy chairman Frank Scherma will be announcing the nominees for major categories at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 PT. The awards ceremony is currently scheduled for September 18, with plans to air on Fox. However, given the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America and the impending strike by the Screen Actors Guild, coupled with recent comments suggesting that studio management is not willing to negotiate in good faith with the writers, it seems likely that the ceremony will be scaled down or possibly even canceled as a televised event.

In terms of genre nominees, Pedro Pascal has received a nomination for The Last of Us, Jenna Ortega for Wednesday, and House of the Dragon and Succession have been recognized in major categories. Succession, in particular, stands out as Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Kieran Culkin have all been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. This marks the first time that three actors from the same series have received nominations in the Lead Actor category in the same year. It remains to be seen whether this will solidify one of them as the winner or potentially split the "voting power" of Succession fans, giving the award to another show.

While Star Wars and Game of Thrones have garnered attention with notable nominations, it has been a relatively quiet year for Star Trek and Marvel. Their nominations have been mostly limited to technical categories such as editing (Ms. Marvel) and makeup (Picard). This could reflect the critical reception of those shows or simply be a result of the high number of successful series this year, especially with shows like Succession, Barry, and Better Call Saul ending during this awards cycle, providing one last opportunity for recognition.
