Andor’s Diego Luna Talks About the ‘Inevitable’ End to the Series

Diego Luna, the esteemed actor who has brought the character of Cassian Andor to life in the Star Wars universe since Rogue One, has conflicting emotions as the conclusion of his Disney+ show, Andor, draws near.

The highly anticipated Star Wars series Andor on Disney+ is nearing its conclusion, and Diego Luna, the star of the show, admits to having mixed feelings about it.

During a video call with the Associated Press, Luna shared his thoughts while on a break from filming the second season of Andor in Great Britain. Luna expressed, "I'm incredibly thrilled during filming, but at the same time, there's always this sense of approaching the end, which evokes a certain melancholy throughout the process."

In the 2016 film Rogue One, fans were introduced to the character of Cassian Andor, a Rebel spy portrayed by Luna. Following the film's success, Luna was given the opportunity to reprise his role in the Andor television series. Although he was aware that the series would only span two seasons, Luna anticipates that bidding farewell will be bittersweet. Luna explained, "There's also an inevitable aspect of acknowledging the sadness that comes with leaving this exceptional team, parting ways with this dynamic, and moving on from this significant chapter of my life."

An Exciting Finale in Store for Cassian Andor

Tony Gilroy, the showrunner for Andor, has confirmed that the final three episodes of Season 2 will focus on "the last three days before Rogue One" and delve into Diego Luna's character's state at that crucial juncture. Additionally, he teased that Season 2's narrative might diverge "in every aspect," although he didn't elaborate, emphasizing the magnitude of the material at hand. Gilroy stated, "We have 1,500 pages of the most dynamic content showcasing these characters' lives to explore. We nailed it the first time, and we don't want to lose any momentum."

As per the cast, Season 2 will span a five-year timeframe, commencing a year after the events of Andor Season 1 and progressing by one year in each subsequent episode until it reaches the beginning of the events in Rogue One. Adria Arjona, Luna's co-star, shared, "Throughout the season, our characters go through significant growth because of the extensive time period. There are time gaps between every couple of episodes. So, for me, this season is incredibly captivating as I get to witness Bix's evolution. It unfolds consistently throughout the entire season, allowing audiences to encounter three distinct versions of Bix."

The critically acclaimed Andor premiered its initial three episodes on Disney+ on September 21, 2022. Returning cast members from Andor Season 1 include Denise Gough, Kyle Stoller, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Stellan Skarsgård. The highly anticipated Andor Season 2 is currently scheduled for an August 2024 debut on Disney+.
