Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Kristine Sutherland Regrets Joyce's 'Mom Clothes'

Christine Sutherland, known for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, recently shared her regrets about the wardrobe choices that didn't fully align with her character.

In the popular series, Sutherland portrayed Joyce Summers, the mother of the titular character. During an interview with Digital Spy, she expressed her desire for changes to be made to her character's clothing, stating, "The only thing I felt that was missing was that I wore a lot of 'mom clothes' that I thought didn't reflect my profession." Sutherland believed that Joyce could have been portrayed as more powerful in her work and cited examples like lawyers who wear double-pleated pants. She didn't want her character, who worked in an art gallery, to be dressed in a similar manner.

Sutherland also voiced her regret about the limited exploration of Joyce Summers's work life in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She expressed a desire to delve deeper into her character's professional world, stating, "I would have liked to have explored more of Joyce's work life and filled it out more. It sometimes felt like she just worked in an art gallery." Sutherland highlighted an episode from the third season, titled "Dead Man's Party," where a scene in her workplace was featured. She considered it her only regret in terms of the character's portrayal.

Joyce Summers' Importance in Buffy The Vampire Slayer

During its iconic run, Buffy the Vampire Slayer introduced audiences to legendary characters like Buffy, portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who have become synonymous with the supernatural genre. While Joyce Summers, played by Christine Sutherland, may not reach the same level of legendary status, her role was still pivotal to the show. Joyce Summers' contribution extended beyond being an anchor for the titular protagonist while she was alive. Her death in the series grounded the concept and added a profound layer to a show that had already experienced its fair share of supernatural twists.

In Season 5, Episode 16 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer titled "The Body," the series explores the profound grief experienced by the characters following Joyce Summers' death in the previous episode. Her passing, attributed to brain cancer, proves to be especially difficult for Buffy, who is emotionally unprepared to face an adversary that cannot be defeated. Joyce's death raises the emotional stakes within the show, as it mourns the loss of one of its most significant supporting characters.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available for streaming on Hulu.
