Citadel Season 2 Release Date Gets Bad News

Joe and Anthony Russo's Amazon series Citadel received exciting news when it was granted a renewal for Season 2 shortly after the debut of its first season in May. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the global spy thriller's return has been delayed. According to a recent report from Variety, Citadel Season 2 is now expected to premiere in late 2024 or early 2025 due to the ongoing writer's strike. The strike began in May when the contract between the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) expired. Concurrently, negotiations between SAG-AFTRA, the actor's union, and AMPTP are also facing a time crunch, with a deadline for an agreement set for July 12th.

When Citadel was greenlit for Season 2, Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon and MGM Studios, hailed the series as a "global phenomenon" and commended its ability to attract a substantial international audience to Prime Video.

"Citadel has truly become a global phenomenon," Salke remarked. "Our aim was always to create a fresh franchise built on original IP that would expand Prime Video's international viewership. This show has successfully captivated a significant number of new international customers on Prime Video."

"The tremendous worldwide reception is a testament to Joe and Anthony Russo's exceptional vision, the incredible talents of Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lesley Manville, and Stanley Tucci, as well as the unwavering dedication of the creative teams, cast, and crew," she added. "Given the overwhelming embrace of this show by our customers, we are not only thrilled to offer the premiere episode of Citadel globally to non-members but also confirm that the series will be returning for a second season."

What is Citadel About?

Amazon describes Citadel as follows: "In Citadel, Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel's fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives."

"They've remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love."

Not All Amazon Prime Video Programs are Delayed Due to the WGA Strike

Although Citadel's second season has been affected by the ongoing strike, not all of Prime Video's shows have faced delays. The production of the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power remains on track and is set to premiere in 2024, while The Boys: Gen V is still scheduled for its debut this fall.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy streaming the first season of Citadel on Amazon Prime Video.
