Doctor Who Cameramen 'Struggled to Keep Up' With Ncuti Gatwa On Set

Ncuti Gatwa's electrifying portrayal of the iconic character on the set of Doctor Who proved to be a challenge for the cameramen as they struggled to keep up with his boundless energy.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gatwa discussed his role as the 15th Doctor, describing the character as emotionally vulnerable. Gatwa stated, "My Doctor is someone who hides their vulnerability with humor, but deep down, they are lonely. I can't reveal too much and spoil anything, but I can tell you that the character is also incredibly energetic. The poor cameramen had a tough time keeping pace with me."

Gatwa, best known for his role in Sex Education and his upcoming debut in Barbie, is eagerly preparing for his journey as the Doctor in Doctor Who, following in the footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, who recently concluded her tenure as the 14th Doctor. Gatwa expressed his excitement about portraying one of television's most beloved characters and shared his vision for revitalizing this legendary role.

Coincidentally, just a week after expressing his desire to play characters like Willy Wonka or the Doctor, Gatwa found himself auditioning for the Time Lord. To prepare for the role, he immersed himself in the Doctor Who universe, binge-watching every episode since the series' revival in 2005. Despite not being a regular fan prior to his involvement with the show, Gatwa quickly fell in love with its ability to transport viewers to space and deliver thrilling adventures.

A particular element of Doctor Who's storyline resonated deeply with Gatwa, drawing a parallel to his own life. The Doctor's survival of a devastating war that wiped out their people struck a chord with him. Having escaped the genocide against the Tutsi minority in Rwanda during his childhood, Gatwa relates to the Doctor's experience of feeling like they fit in everywhere and nowhere at the same time. He passionately declares, "I am the Doctor. The Doctor is me." This personal connection fuels his determination to embody the role.

Reflecting on the whirlwind of his career, which gained momentum with his breakout role in Sex Education in 2018, Gatwa acknowledges the train of success that he is still trying to comprehend. However, over the past year, his career has soared to new heights, culminating in his casting as the 15th Doctor.

As Gatwa steps into the shoes of the 15th Doctor, his unique perspective and personal connection to the character's backstory are poised to infuse the Time Lord with renewed vigor and vitality.
