House of the Dragon Season 2 Premiere Date Unchanged by Writer's Strike

Despite the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, HBO has been diligently working on the development of the highly-anticipated second season of their popular series and Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon. The strike has had no impact on House of the Dragon's second season, as the scripts have already been completed, and the production appears to be progressing smoothly. Concerned fans have been speculating about the potential effects of the WGA strike on the series' release date, such as the need for additional ADR or improvisation. However, it seems that House of the Dragon remains on schedule for its projected release. According to a recent report from Variety, viewers can still expect House of the Dragon Season 2 to hit screens in the summer of 2024.

Game of Thrones Creator on House of the Dragon Filming Through Writers Strike

"The second season of House of the Dragon commenced filming on April 11 and will continue in London and Wales," shared franchise creator George R.R. Martin. "The scripts for all eight Season 2 episodes were completed months ago, well before the strike began. Each episode underwent multiple rounds of revisions, incorporating feedback from HBO, myself, and addressing budget considerations. There will be no further revisions. The writers have fulfilled their duties; the rest now rests in the hands of the directors, cast, crew... and, of course, the dragons."

In a recent interview, showrunner Ryan Condal expressed his excitement about continuing the story. "Now we can delve into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling, akin to Game of Thrones. George [R.R. Martin] and I have always envisioned this particular narrative as a Shakespearean or Greek tragedy. The series delves deeply into a house crumbling from within. With all the pieces set on the board, I am truly thrilled to unveil the next chapter and witness the aftermath of Viserys' absence, which will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences."

What is House of the Dragon about?

The series is described as follows: "House of the Dragon finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires-real and imagined-crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

The first season of the Game of Thrones spinoff features an impressive cast including Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.
