Netflix Blasts Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher Season 3 Ad: "It's So Disrespectful"

The Witcher Season 3 is currently streaming on Netflix, and according to critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the season has received a positive response, boasting an 87% rating. However, the audience score tells a different story, with only 33% approval. One of the primary reasons for the declining fan sentiment is the departure of Henry Cavill, who portrayed the protagonist Geralt of Rivia. Season 3 marks Cavill's final appearance in the role, as Liam Hemsworth is set to take over as Geralt in Season 4 and beyond.

There is no denying that Cavill has been a standout element of the show over the course of three seasons. Not only is he a phenomenal actor, but he is also an ardent fan of The Witcher IP. His deep knowledge and passion for the source material shine through in his performance. In contrast, some viewers have criticized the show's writers and production team for either lacking familiarity with the source material or taking excessive creative liberties with it. Indeed, the show has deviated from the source material on numerous occasions, particularly in Season 3.

Recognizing Cavill's significant contribution to the show's appeal, it appears that someone on the Netflix marketing team has launched a new campaign for the third season, specifically highlighting that Cavill is still a part of the series.

While promoting Season 3 by emphasizing Henry Cavill's presence may be an effective marketing strategy, it does create an awkward situation for Liam Hemsworth and the upcoming seasons. The message conveyed by the campaign, which essentially says "it still features Henry Cavill, not Liam Hemsworth yet," could be perceived as disrespectful to Hemsworth.

In response to the ad, a fan expressed their disappointment, deeming it "disrespectful" and suggesting that Hemsworth should quit. Another fan criticized the ad as "tone-deaf" and accused it of showing "zero respect" for Hemsworth. While it is unlikely that any significant consequences will arise from this situation, it is clear that the optics are awkward. Fortunately for the show, despite the attention drawn to this issue, most fans are still primarily focused on the fact that Cavill will be leaving the series.
