Pikmin 4 Makes Disappointing Multiplayer Change

Pikmin 4 is set to introduce several fresh features that were absent in previous installments of the series. However, the game will also remove a popular element from its predecessor: true co-op mode in the story mode. In Pikmin 3 Deluxe, players could embark on the game's story mode with a friend assuming the role of one of the captains. Although Pikmin 4 does offer a co-op mode, it is significantly more limited. According to the game's eShop page, the second player can now only utilize an on-screen pointer to "hurl pebbles at enemies, stunning them and unleashing helpful items from the inventory."

This co-op mode bears resemblance to the one featured in Super Mario Galaxy, where a second player could assist by collecting Star Bits and launching them at enemies. While this feature is a nice option for households with young children, it is not as engaging as true co-op gameplay. It is worth noting that Pikmin 3 did not initially include co-op when it launched on the Wii U in 2013; the option was added later with the release of Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Therefore, if there is sufficient demand, it is possible that co-op could be added to Pikmin 4 in a future update.

Although the absence of story mode co-op is somewhat disappointing, Pikmin 4 players will have a new multiplayer mode to enjoy. Dandori Battles introduce a fresh gameplay experience where players can collaborate or compete against each other. In competitive matches, players utilize Oatchi and their Pikmin to gather the most items before time runs out. ComicBook.com recently had the opportunity to attend an in-person preview of the game, where we tested out this mode. Dandori Battles felt fast-paced and exhilarating, offering a unique twist on the traditional Pikmin gameplay! Readers can find more of our hands-on impressions of the game here.

Pikmin 4 is scheduled for release on July 21st.
