Yes, Junji Ito's Uzumaki Anime Is Still In the Works

Originally announced in 2019, the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki has encountered a series of hurdles on its journey to airing on Adult Swim. The production faced initial delays due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving fans uncertain about the release date. However, there is good news for eager viewers as the creators and Production I.G., responsible for the upcoming anime, have recently hinted at the possibility of new updates arriving sooner than expected.

Initially slated for an October release last year, Uzumaki was unfortunately pushed back indefinitely. While previous anime adaptations, like Maniac: Japanese Tales of The Macabre and The Junji Ito Collection, have attempted to bring Ito's captivating work to life, the preview footage of Uzumaki has left fans astounded. The series' visuals, presented in black and white, closely resemble Ito's distinctive style, generating immense excitement among horror enthusiasts. With its planned four-episode run, fans are eagerly anticipating whether Uzumaki will successfully capture the essence of its source material.

Uzumaki Update

During the recent Anime Expo, attendees had the opportunity to gain insights from the Production I.G. panel, where Maki Terashima-Furuta, the studio's president, provided reassuring news about the progress of Uzumaki. Terashima-Furuta delighted fans by confirming that the anime adaptation was still in active production. Additionally, she tantalized attendees by hinting that Uzumaki might unveil fresh footage and updates during this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The prospect of Junji Ito himself making an appearance at the convention further amplifies the anticipation surrounding the revelation of new details about this much-anticipated and eerie anime.

If you haven't had the chance to delve into Uzumaki, one of Junji Ito's renowned and chilling tales, let me provide you with Viz Media's description of the original manga series: "Korouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: Uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. Fall into a whirlpool of terror."
