MAPPA Studio's Packed Schedule Sparks Discussion

The head of MAPPA Studios has caused discussion by explaining why the studio has such a heavy workload.

In today's anime industry, there's a lot of competition, and studios need to work really hard to get noticed. For example, studios like Kyoto Animation are known for their beautiful animation, while big ones like Toei Animation have been around for a long time, which gives them a strong track record. But for newer studios, they've been successful by creating popular shows, although some people say they might be pushing their animators too hard. This issue has been a big topic of discussion, especially with the recent rise of MAPPA Studios. And now, the CEO of MAPPA has talked about this in a new interview.

The conversation began when Natalie asked Manabu Otsuka about the work done by MAPPA. In response, Otsuka praised the company's shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and In This Corner of the World. When asked about how they plan to make MAPPA more well-known, Otsuka shared the following thoughts on establishing MAPPA as a widely recognized studio:

"When we thought about what we'd need to do to achieve [success], the first thing we needed to do was increase productivity. It is difficult to catch up to level of quality of Kyoto Animation and ufotable in a short period of time. It would be too late for MAPPA, a backward-looking studio, to spend 20-30 years trying to reach that point.

So we had to take a different approach from the studios that were already ahead of us. We thought how we could produce a lot and gain experience while maintaining a high level of quality while at the same time branding the studio to join the race with the industry's top studios in the least amount of time possible."

This explanation from Otsuka helps us understand why MAPPA is working so fast. Many anime fans joke that any popular new series will be animated by MAPPA. The studio has been handling a lot of projects like Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man, and Vinland Saga. They have been really busy, and this busy schedule has made them famous among fans. But recently, their fame has caused some problems.

For example, there was a lot of attention on Jujutsu Kaisen's second season recently because some of the people working on it spoke up about the really tough schedule they have to deal with. From the animators to the episode directors, the people at MAPPA have to work really hard, and it doesn't seem like they're getting much of a break. They're all working hard to make Otsuka's earlier statement come true, but some fans are starting to wonder if it's worth it in the end. And as the anime industry keeps growing, it looks like these high-pressure situations are going to become more common.
